Winter 2023 Performances & Programs

Jump back into the New Year with Dance Place as we announce our Winter programming. You can choose to: 

  • dance your way into 2023 with our adult and kids classes

  • sign up for our Creative Arts Programs, 

  • audition for our pre-professional Dance Place Youth Performing Company,

  • and make your way to our Brookland campus to engage with artists through innovative performances and community led conversations and sharings.

Whatever you decide, be sure to mark your calendars with these upcoming Dance Place Presentation and Education Programs. This is only the beginning!

Energizers Creative Arts After School Program

The Energizers Creative Arts After School Program is an art influenced curriculum based program for youth ages 7-12. The program helps children and preteens grow, learn, have fun, build healthy life-styles, and make new friends.

 

Energizers Creative Arts Teen Leadership Program

The Energizers Creative Arts Teen Leadership Program is a holistic art-based career readiness program for teens ages 13 to 19. The program offers a curriculum that utilizes classes, life skills, artistic expression, and hands-on job training in leadership, administration, theater craft and arts education.

 

Dance Place’s Youth Performing Company Auditions

Monday January 23rd from 6:30-8pm 

The Dance Place Youth Performing Company is Dance Place’s resident pre-professional youth dance company for ages 13-19. The company has a multi style focus including Hip Hop, Contemporary, and the African Diaspora. 

Rehearsals are on Mondays from 6:30-8pm, starting January 30, 2023. Participants must also take at least one Dance Place youth or adult class during the week. Paid performances will be announced throughout the season.

Adult & Kids Classes

Beginning January 9, 2023

Dance Place’s Kids on the Move program provides dance studio education to students in the DMV area. Classes are accessible, inclusive and designed to provide the foundation of dance education for ages toddlers to teens.

Adult Classes will start January 9th, 2023.Move with us this Winter/Spring season! Be sure to check out our Rotation Class series, which offers a unique experience for all movers. 

 

Haus of Bambi: An Intimate Night with Bambi and Molasses 

January 27-28, 2023 at 7pm

Dance Place presents Artist in Residence (AIR) Robert Woofter in haus of bambi’s An Intimate Night with Bambi and Molasses. This cabaret extravangza explores queer intimacy and the stories that shape us.

 

Gilded Lily Burlesque: Return to Glamour 

February 10, 2023 at 8pm

The sparkle of a rhinestone in the spotlight. The hypnotic shimmy of fringe across the hips. The caress of a silk stocking along the leg. This year’s Return to Glamour is a celebration of returns: the return of live burlesque, the return of glitz and glamour, and the return of Gilded Lily to DC!

Last Night the DJ Saved My Life: Who Heals the Healers? Panel Discussion

The role of “caretaker” in the queer community has often been held by Drag Artists, DJs’, Club/Bar owners, and a myriad of other protectors of queer magic. These spaces and people serve as conduits of the community by affirming that solely standing in one’s truth can be a pathway to joy and healing. But who protects these protectors? 

In continued support of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities, The Clarice Smith Performing Art Center’s BlackLight Summit and Dance Place have partnered to present an exciting new drag show produced by haus of bambi, afterG. afterGLOW closes out the three-day 2023 BlackLight Summit with a glitter-filled, wig-pulling, lip-syncing, drag celebration.

 

Alan M. Kriegsman (AMK) Creative Residency: Léonardo Sandoval

February 13-18, 2022

During this residency, choreographer/ dancer Léonardo Sandoval and composer/ instrumentalist Gregory Richardson will collaborate to initiate the creation of seed material for a new evening-length piece of choreographed and improvised tap and Afro-Brazilian dance, house, body percussion, and live music for 7 dancers and 4-piece band.

chitra.MOVES: TEMPLE

TEMPLE shines the spotlight on the fraying of public life and the growing reality that people participate in institutions less and less. Through the languages of Indian Dance and Hip Hop culture, Chitra Subramanian explores the experiences and stories of her South Asian immigrant journey through the lens of the major institutions that were powerful anchors in her life. From the Hindu Temple in Pittsburgh to the temple of the DC Club, Chitra showcases the limitless ways in which Hip Hop & dance continue to inspire and transform.
