Dance Place Welcomes Tariq Darrell O’Meally as Artistic Director

We are thrilled to announce Tariq Darrell O’Meally as Dance Place’s new Artistic Director. An innovative artist, producer, educator, curator, and community organizer, Tariq brings a bold vision and commitment to socially impactful performances and inclusivity to our organization. His extensive leadership in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area dance scene marks a significant addition to our organization.

Honoring a Legacy of Artistic Excellence

Tariq follows in the footsteps of prior esteemed artistic leadership, and the many other artists that have contributed uniquely to Dance Place’s rich artistic legacy. Their visionary leadership over the last 45 years has shaped our commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement.

“It is incredibly humbling to return to Dance Place, as Artistic Director, after cutting my teeth here as an artist and administrator,” Tariq says. “I am excited to serve this community and to create lasting partnerships with artists. Additionally, I have an abundance of gratitude for the path that each of my predecessors guided Dance Place forward during times of challenge and triumph. There is an African Proverb that says, ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. ’ I am galvanized by the opportunity to travel miles with the leadership team, Andre Mazelin and Anastasia Johnson, Dance Place staff, our regional and national community, and the artists that we serve.”

A Local Leader in the DMV Community

An advocate and leader in the DMV dance scene, Tariq’s contributions to the local dance scene are enormous. He is widely respected for his transformative work, including his role as creator and lead curator of the BlackLight Summit, a “think and move tank” that re-envisions dance performances. Tariq’s work to re-imagine kinesthetic narratives as a means to resist and disrupt canonized stories that have perpetuated the dehumanization of marginalized groups, specifically black people, resonates deeply with Dance Place’s mission and programming.

Embracing the Future

Tariq’s appointment marks a significant milestone for Dance Place, solidifying our commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement. We anticipate a new era of creativity and collaboration that will resonate across our diverse community. This new era promises innovative performances and inclusive programming that inspire meaningful connections and great dance!

Together, with our supporters, artists, and staff we warmly welcome Tariq to the team!
