New Releases Showcase Lineup

Saturday, May 18 at 8pm

Dance Place’s annually curated showcase features some of the best new works by established and emerging choreographers.

This performance features 2018 New Releases Commission recipient Jamal Abrams as well as new works from Kasi Aysola, Da’Shown Rawls, Bre Seals, Robert Woofter, and duo Samantha Sobash and Lauren Sotolongo.

About the Choreographers

Jamal Abrams premieres his new work meeting blue, an autobiographical solo that focuses on trauma – how to interrupt, accept, and cleanse, then redirect into healing.

Kasi Aysola is a dancer, choreographer, and Co-Founder of Prakriti Dance, which uses traditional Bhanta Natyam movement to explore philosophy and the human experience. In Thillana, the melody of Ragashree is complimented with rapturous, lively movement that plays on rhythmic patterns.

Da’Shown Rawl presents Tie Me with Your Eyes about the aftereffect of taking care of someone with schizophrenia. His RawArts Dance Company is a contemporary dance company that pushes dancers to develop their versatility, artistry, and athleticism.

How We Got To Now by Bre Seals challenges the audience to see through multiple lenses, to balance the forces of destiny and chaos to bridge the gap between doubts and decision. As an Artistic Director of The BREathe Dance Project, Seals finds true hope and purpose in producing her own works, as it serves as a testimony and lesson to others.

Robert Woofter’s haus of bambi is a movement-based company in Washington, DC that produces genderless and gendermore fantasies for stage and screen. His short film, ayo sis, explores queer worldmaking constructed through euphoria and fantasy.

Samantha Sobash and Lauren Sotolongo present their collaborative Forbidden Fruit, a multimedia performance that explores social desires to consume without permission and the process of self-reclamation through spoken word, dance, and film.
