From dance classes to the Energizers Creative Arts Program and summer camps, the fund enriches the lives of youth, fostering creativity, self-expression, and personal growth.

A Shared Vision: Hyman & Edith Perlo’s Dedication to Community and the Arts

Hyman was a Washingtonian, raised in DC, with a deep love for his city. Edith Miller Perlo was born and raised in Washington, DC. Both shared a deep commitment to community and the arts. Hyman’s athletic prowess and dedication to service, coupled with Edith’s entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering support, formed the bedrock of their shared endeavors.

A Legacy of Impact: Honoring Their Contributions

Hyman’s remarkable journey from leading the Roosevelt High School basketball team to his service in the 509 Parachute Infantry Battalion during World War II exemplifies his resilience and devotion to duty. Post-war, he continued to serve his community, ultimately becoming the Director of Community Relations for the Capital Center and the Baltimore Bullets, channeling his passion for athletics into meaningful programs for children and adults.

Edith’s unwavering support and keen business acumen were instrumental in the success of their family-owned women’s dress store, Quality Fashion Corner located at 7th and Q Streets NW. When Carla shared her vision of opening a studio/theater for dance, Edith said “Call it Dance Place.” In this simple act of naming, Edith captured the spirit of community, creativity, and inclusion that would become the foundation of Dance Place.

Renaming the Fund: A Fitting Tribute

The decision to rename the fund reflects the profound impact both Hyman and Edith had on Dance Place and the community at large. Their shared dedication to youth education and culture continues to resonate, inspiring future generations to embrace creativity, diversity, and inclusion.
