Dance Place announces a call for applicants for a residency opportunity open to artists who identify as disabled* and are based in the Washington, DC region. Dance Place’s Dance & Disability Residency provides 40 hours of rehearsal space over one week and an honorarium of $4,000, plus an additional accessibility stipend of $1,000.00. Technical and production support is not provided.
The selected Artist/Company will attend two planning meetings leading up to the residency. In these meetings, Dance Place will work with the selected Artist/Company to meet their accessibility needs and develop the residency schedule.
Residency dates are July 19-24, 2022. During this time period, the selected Artist/Company will have 40 hours of uninterrupted studio time to generate new movement material and/or explore and expand existing work.
Dance Place’s Dance & Disability Residency Application is due Friday, March 25, 2022. Applicants will be notified of their selection status in April 2022.
The selected Artist/Company will work with Dance Place to share their process with the community. This could take many forms: a public showing at the conclusion of the residency, a photo essay, a social media takeover, a video blog, or any other type of process share that fits the selected Artist/Company’s vision and process. Dance Place will also include the selected Artist/Company in our “Creative Entry” written response program by providing a writer to highlight the process of the selected Artist/Company.
Dance Place’s goals for this program are twofold:
- Connect with and support the growth and vision of artists who identify as disabled in the Washington, DC region
- Utilize this program, along with our Disability Justice Forums, to increase our capacity for accessibility practices in real time i.e. utilize asl/captioning/audio description. We hope this program will create an environment of growth for both Dance Place and the selected Artist/Company.
One Artist/Company will be selected for this inaugural Dance & Disability Residency by a curatorial and consulting panel:
Ben Levine, Director of Production at Dance Place and Producing Director of Extreme Lengths Productions
Devin Hill, dance artist and former Dance Place intern
Tiffani Jackson, founder of TRJ Bridges and accessibility consultant for Dance Place
Janice Marks, Dance Place board member
By requirement of Mayor’s Order 2021-099, the selected Artist/Company and any collaborators participating onsite at Dance Place must be either fully vaccinated against Covid-19 or able to provide a valid medical or religious exemption from vaccination against Covid-19. Masks may be required indoors based on health and safety restrictions at the time of the residency.
