The Dance Place Curatorial Vision works hand in hand with our Mission and Values. Dance Place supports Washington DC-area and nationally/ internationally based choreographers, companies, dancers, designers, technicians, and other collaborators by creating opportunities for the research, creation, and presentation of their work.
Dance Place prioritizes equity in our programming, centering artists who have been systemically excluded from such opportunities. Rooted in our nation’s capital, our programming is committed to breadth that reflects the diverse community we live in; it is our vision that any person, no matter their race, gender identity or economic background, can come to Dance Place and see themselves reflected on stage or in the studios.
Dance Place contributes to a thriving dance ecosystem in the region, country and world by supporting dancemakers at all stages of their careers and every stage of the creative process. Our opportunities are non-linear, giving artists freedom to move from one system of support to another, including but not limited to: early creative research, commissions, presentations, our multi-year Artist In Residence program, and more. Artists may encounter Dance Place at any stage in their career, and through any of these myriad opportunities.
CREATIVE RESEARCH
Dance Place’s Works In Progress (WIP) Series brings dancemakers and audiences together to learn about the creative process and participate in facilitated discussion. In the FORTITUDE Season, this includes our Exquisite Frame Series.
The Alan M. Kriegsman Creative Residency offers focused time for the development of new work by nationally-renowned choreographers, in honor of Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Alan M. “Mike” Kriegsman.
Fieldwork is an interdisciplinary forum for artists to share developing works and exchange peer-to-peer feedback.
DIGITAL CONTENT
Our Virtual Programs include conversations, performances, film screenings, podcasts, and more. We host timely discussions from a variety of local artists and community members such as SOLE Defined Live!, a series of virtual conversations in response to the recent and historic violence against Black people and systemic racism in our dance community.
