Briana Ashley Stuart is a performing artist, dancer, choreographer and dance entrepreneur originally from Detroit, Michigan, based in Brussels, Belgium. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a BFA in dance and a BA in sociology and after graduation she was a development intern in grant and individual giving at Dance Place. Since her internship, she has worked internationally as an independent artist and with a number of companies and artists, including StepAfrika!, SJEwing & Dancers, ZIKIT, 4Hoogkindertheater, Lila Magnin and Gorges Ocloo. She presented her latest work Moving Meditations, a multidisciplinary work about healing at KVS Brussels on March 25, 2023, which was the first step in her research into percussive dance and movement and sound in space. More about her artistic interests and works can be seen in her introspective dance lecture “Stepping: Freedom in Form” produced by the BOZAR museum in Brussels, and more recently her dance lecture “How to Unveil the Secret Power of Movement and Sound to Create” at TEDxBrussels in May 2023.
In addition, Briana created STU Arts Dance, an arts consultancy organization that upholds the values of community, culture & cooperation through the art of dance. With a focus on social sustainability, STU Arts Dance utilizes dance and movement as a means of personal and professional development through engaging dance performances for special events, specialized dance programs, team building workshops,etc . Briana has been featured in Brown Girls Do Ballet, Together Magazine, BRUZZ, Le Soir and BX1 Media. Other notable awards and recognitions include the 2017 Dance Place New Releases Choreographer award, the University of Michigan Black Alumni Council’s 2018 Five under Ten Young Alumni Award, and the University of Michigan’s 2021 Emerging Artist Award.
