Presentation Application Artist Q&A
What is the Presentation Series?
The 2019-2020 Presentation Series is Dance Place’s 39th annual year-round program featuring local, national, and international dance artists. Executive Artistic Director Christopher K. Morgan leads curation for the Presentation Series with support from Associate Curator Sarah Greenbaum, Director of Production Ben Levine and other key Dance Place staff members.
What is a Presentation?
A full evening presentation of completed work—either premieres or re-stagings—created and produced by an artist or company. If selected for a Presentation, the artist / company receives a set fee from Dance Place. The artist / company is responsible for providing their creative team, including choreographer(s), performer(s), lighting designer, stage manager, and any other designers necessary to execute the vision of the work.
In addition to the set artist fee, Dance Place provides artists in our Presentation Series with extensive marketing support, three production meetings leading up to performances, and management of ticket sales. Dance Place provides the following staffing for all performances in our Presentation Series: Box Office Manager & Assistant, House Manager, ushers, two board operators and one backstage technician.
Dance Place presentations can be evening-length or mixed-bill. The target length for a presentation is 60-90 minutes (although some variation is possible.) Artists in the Presentation Series should be professional-level performers / designers, the majority of whom are over 18 years of age (some exceptions apply.)
I’m not sure if my work is the right fit for Dance Place’s Presentation Series. What other performance opportunities does Dance Place offer?
Following the Presentation Series application, Dance Place will release applications for additional performance opportunities, outlined below. Artists who apply for the Presentation Series will be alerted to their selection status prior to the release of applications for these additional opportunities. Applications for the following performance opportunities will be available no later than February 2019 and will be due in early April 2019.

Who should apply for the Presentation Series?
Dance Place encourages applicants of all races, genders, national origins, religions, abilities, veteran’s statuses, sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions for all of our programs, including the Presentation Series.
Dance Place’s 2019-2020 Presentation Series is open to local, national, and international artists / companies working in any style/genre of dance and at any phase in their career. Local (DMV-based) artists / companies can expect to receive a flat artist fee of at least $2500. Touring artists/companies can expect to receive an artist fee plus transportation and housing. Please note that, in most cases, touring artists/ companies (those requiring transportation/ housing) will have access to funding sources outside of Dance Place to support their Dance Place presentation. These sources include, but are not limited to, New England Foundation for the Arts, National Performance Network, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation and local/state-funded touring initiatives. If you require a minimum fee for your presentation, please note the fee in your application.
My work was not selected for the Presentation Series. What now?
You’re in good company! Last year, Dance Place reviewed the work of over 150 artists for 40 weekend presentations. Unfortunately, we can’t offer presentation weekends to every artist whose work leaves a positive impression on our curatorial team. Programming decisions are based on a wide variety of factors including but not limited to: range and breadth of work represented in the season, equity in presenting a wide range of artists/companies at all stages of career, timing/logistical issues, and financial restraints around touring works.
If your work was not selected for the 2019-2020 Season, check out our next round of applications (see more about these opportunities in the third question above.) Feedback will be provided upon request for artists / companies not selected for the 2019-2020 Presentation Series.
When is the 2019-2020 Presentation Series application due?
