As DC’s foremost presenter of movement arts, Dance Place forms the lynchpin of dance in our DMV community. For 39 years, we’ve committed to presenting a breadth of artistic visions, to supporting the artists and patrons that call us “neighbor,” and to advocating for equity in the arts on a national and international scale. This year, we refine and expand on that vision as we move towards our landmark 40th Anniversary Season.

The 2019-2020 AMPLIFY Season represents a gathering, an expansion, and sharpening of our mission. We are proud to welcome you to this new year full of exemplary vision and prodigious artistry. Each creator you’ll meet this year touches on these themes in one way or another. By amplifying their voices, Dance Place offers YOU the chance to hear new stories, change your perspective, and connect with the people important in your life, those already met and those still to meet. Let us amplify your senses – you’ll find that the world is even more rich with meaning and connection than you had ever imagined.

1 : comprehensive quality
2 : liberality of views or taste

We live in a diverse community and have crafted a season to match, where any person can come to Dance Place and see themselves reflected on stage or in the studio. We encourage and seek out artists of all races, gender identities and expressions, national origins, religions, abilities, veteran’s statuses, and sexual orientations for our programs. Dance Place collates a broad and inclusive array of the global arts community, amplifying a range of voices.

1 : to promote the interests or cause of
2 : to uphold or defend as valid or right
3 : to hold up or serve as a foundation or prop for
4 : to keep (something) going

For dancemakers at all stages of their careers and every stage of the creative process, Dance Place is a keystone in our thriving dance ecosystem. We provide flexible, nonlinear opportunities that give artists freedom to move from one support structure to another as best serves their vision. Our impact ripples out, both in each community we touch and in the individual careers of artists we foster. By creating bespoke structures of support that evolve along with our neighborhood, patrons, and artists, Dance Place invests in the long-term artistic health of the arts community.

1 : justice, according to natural law or right specifically
2 : something that is dealing fairly and equally with all concerned

The arts are transformative. They invigorate communities, grow strong critical thinkers, rewire the brain for productivity, and improve community cohesion by connecting us to the wider world.

According to a recent study by Americans for the Arts, “nonprofit arts and culture organizations pumped an estimated $61.1 billion into the economy” in addition to the “$74.1 billion” spent by their audiences in event-related expenses.
A 2002 report by the Arts Education Partnership revealed that students “exposed to drama, music and dance are often more proficient at reading, writing and math.”
The School of Social Policy & Practice at the University of Pennsylvania found in their 2017 study that in lower-income neighborhoods, cultural resources are “significantly linked to better health, schooling and security,” including a 14% decrease in child abuse and neglect, a 5% decrease in obesity, and a 18% decrease in the serious crime rate.

Dance Place creates bridges to the life-changing power of the arts, and is devoted to delivering access where it’s needed most. With one eye towards justice and the other towards a fairer future, we are committed to dismantling white supremacy, reshaping bodily autonomy, challenging the binary, and empowering the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and creators through every program we offer.
