Dance Place is happy to announce our open application for the 2022-2024 Artist In Residence (AIR) program.
Dance Place’s AIR Program provides multi-year support to artists with a developed artistic point of view who have not received significant prior institutional support to advance this point of view.
By actively elevating the visibility of our AIRs work to a wide array of audiences, supporters, and presenters, the program provides strategic, artistic, and business development support including rehearsal space, feedback, professional opportunities, and presentations. Specifically designed for DMV-area creators, the AIR Program is part of a larger curatorial vision for Dance Place that supports artists at all stages of their careers and at every stage of the creative process. With an individually tailored approach for each artist in the Program, Dance Place aims to increase support for early-to-mid-career artists in direct response to the DC dance community we serve and are situated within.
Dance Place believes that people of color, people in the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities and women must be centered in the work we do. Hence, we strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or who are members of other systemically marginalized communities.
If you would like to be considered to be a Dance Place Artist in Residence between September 2022-August 2024, please complete an application (link below). Before completing the application please review the artist Q&A below. After reviewing, direct any questions to Dance Place’s Associate Curator, Sarah Greenbaum, at sarahg@danceplace.org.
Dance Place recommends that you complete the application through google forms in one sitting– sometimes, leaving a google form open on your desktop for an extended period causes problems when submitting. If you have any questions about whether your application has been submitted, you may email sarahg@danceplace.org.
Added AIR Information Session!
Missed our first AIR info session? Have more questions? Attend our second (added) AIR virutal info session on Monday, January 10 from 6-7pm.
Email sarahg@danceplace.org to register. Please spread the word to any DC-area artist who may be interested in Dance Place’s 2022-2024 Artist in Residence program.

AIR Application Artist Q&A
What is the Artist in Residence (AIR) program?
The 2022-2024 AIR program is Dance Place’s third biannual program committed to supporting Washington, DC-area based artists or companies over the course of two years through presentation opportunities, direct financial support, rehearsal space grants, consultation and more. AIR artists for the 2022-2024 cohort will be selected by the Dance Place curatorial team: Associate Curators and producers dani tirrell and Sarah Greenbaum and Director of Production Ben Levine, with support from and other key Dance Place staff members and the Dance Place Artist Advisory Council.
Dance Place’s Artists in Residence program responds to a need in the Washington, DC regional dance community for increased support for early- to mid-career artists. We have observed this need directly and heard it expressed by countless artists working across different genres. The Artist in Residence Program is part of Dance Place’s affirmation and refinement of our role as a critical and comprehensive artist resource by supporting dancemakers at all stages of their careers and at every phase of the creative process.
Who should apply for the AIR program?
Dance Place believes that people of color, people in the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities and women must be centered in the work we do. Hence, we strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or who are members of other systemically marginalized communities.
Dance Place’s 2022 – 2024 AIR program is open to artists with a developed artistic point of view who have not received significant prior institutional support to advance this point of view, and who are based in the Washington, DC region working in any style/ genre of dance. Dance Place acknowledges that labels such as early-career and mid-career are challenging because every artist follows a different path and that these labels mean different things in different circumstances.
What is the December 1 AIR open house? What if I’m not available that day?
AIR applicants are encouraged, but not required, to attend the AIR open house on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. The open house will run from 5:00-7:00pm over Zoom; interested applicants may stop by at any point during this window to ask questions and discuss their application with Associate Curator Sarah Greenbaum. (Artists are not expected or required to stay for the full window of time.)
If you are not available on December 1, feel free to set up a Zoom call with Associate Curator Sarah Greenbaum to discuss your application: sarahg@danceplace.org.
Who was selected as a Dance Place AIR previously?
Dance Place’s inaugural Artists In Residence were SOLE Defined and Heart Stück Bernie. Their residency ran September 1, 2018- August 31, 2020. The second AIR cohort includes Tariq Darrell O’Meally and Britta Joy Peterson. These artists exemplify our continued advocacy for local trailblazers who are at a pivotal stage of their artistic trajectories.
I was not selected as an Artist in Residence. What now?
In order to provide the most robust support possible for our AIRs, Dance Place selects only two artists/ companies biannually. If you were not selected this round, thank you for taking the time to apply! Please consider applying for our 2022-2023 presentation series if you are interested in an evening-length presentation. Check the Dance Place website periodically for updates on these application cycles.
When is the AIR application due?

I have more questions. Who can I reach out to?
