Exquisite Frame July 2021 Selected Artists

Dance Place is excited to share the selected artists for the upcoming Exquisite Frame presentation in July!

Curated and hosted by Dance Place AIR Britta Joy Peterson and guest-curator/host Rebecca A. Ferrell, artists Annie Choudhury, Carolyn Hoehner, Emily Ames, Lauren DeVera, and William Miller Jr. will be sharing new works virtually on Saturday, July 10th at 6:30pm EST.

Annie Choudhury (she/her) is a native DMV artist that enjoys visual art, song writing, and shaping predominantly conceptual works.  She graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, and has been working as an artist in the DC area ever since.  Always looking to expand her creative practice she is building off the pleasure of Stage Managing CKM&A, PEARSONWIDRIG DANCETHEATER, Heart Stück Bernie, darlingdance, and many other local and national companies.  She spent eight years at Dance Place as their Resident Stage Manager, Master Electrician, and Associate Technical Director.  She wants to thank all of her fellow artists for making this piece possible.

Carolyn Hoehner (she/her) is a dancer, actor, and maker in Washington DC. Her creative research centers on audience empathy and using radical hospitality as a form for performance. She believes in the art of a good dinner party. Some artsy credits include being selected as a 2019 fellow at Art: Omi Dance where she will return as a mentor in July 2021, a 2017 choreographer in Doug Varone’s DEVICES cohort, and a 2016 artist-in-residence at the Trinity Fellows Academy. Currently she is dancing and making with Britta Joy Peterson, Robert Priore, Tariq Darrell O’Meally, and Extreme Lengths Productions. For mostly content of her cat Toulouse, a ginger cat who lives with Carolyn in her Navy Yard studio apartment, you can follow her on instagram @carohoehner.

Emily Ames (she/her) is a dancer, choreographer, and collaborator who tries to add sequins and a touch of irreverence wherever she can. She graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with degrees in Dance and History, then stashed her diplomas in the back of her closet to join Studio Theatre’s marketing department. When not at her 9-5, Emily dances for Heart Stück Bernie and Britta Joy Peterson. Her choreography has been presented at the NextNOW Fest, the American College Dance Association, UMD’s Second Season series, and supported by Dance Metro DC and Washington Project for the Arts. As a member of ANC: artist neighbor collective, Emily created work for Dance Place’s Physically Distant Commission series and received support from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Past artistic highlights include: destroying abandoned classrooms with Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s blessing, throwing a post-apocalyptic party courtesy of Monstah Black, and touring Sinaloa, Mexico with PEARSONWIDRIG DANCETHEATER along with many, many oranges.

Lauren DeVera (she/her) (BA, RYT 200, CAPP, MSBR-T, CLC, MFT) is a certified life coach, trauma-informed facilitator, dance educator, and choreographer dedicated to empowering others through movement, mindfulness, introspection, and self-care. She received her degree in Dance Performance and Communications from Old Dominion University and has been teaching professionally for 11 years. A distinguished thought leader and educator in the arts community with performance and teaching credits including The Kennedy Center, Howard Theatre, Dance Place DC, Culture Shock DC, World of Dance, BET, CW Network, George Washington University, Old Dominion University, NPR, and Dept. of Energy. Combining her love for people and dance, she created & founded The Lion’s Den, an inclusive community connecting through movement, wellness, and self-expression – offering weekly dance and wellness classes, art socials, dance battles and more. A passionate facilitator, Lauren hosts empowering workshops & healing circles focused on connection, transformation, and purpose. She’s also the host of the Thrive + Thread podcast, a sacred soul space to lean into healing, self-love, personal growth, and creativity. You can find her reading, writing, and drinking coffee in her free time!

William L. Miller, Jr. (he/him) is an Interdisciplinary Artist from Long Island, NY with strong roots and foundation in PG County, Maryland. Will’s formative artistic journey began as a Musician & All-County Bandsmen in high school. Most of Will’s early Dance “training” came from experimenting with movement, choreographing routines to many kinds of music, and performing as a high energy Drum Major. Miller attended the University of Maryland, College Park which introduced him to the broader DMV Dance Community. Since then he has danced as a member of Dynamic Dance Team, was a Chief Artistic Director & Choreography Captain of Culture Shock ® Washington DC, and has co-created many diverse projects within the community including: Code Red Project, Sticks N Stones, “Bloom” Workshops, and the “Metamorphosis” Class Series. Outside of the DMV, he has had the privilege to learn from Creative Dir. Rhapsody James as an Alumnus of Motivating Excellence S7 in Los Angeles, briefly trained with Dana Foglia Dance Studios, was an Orange County Dance Festival 2020 Rising Artist Selectee, and was set to commission with Art Share LA before the onset of the pandemic. Moving beyond, Miller hopes to continue to connect and share with others through aesthetic experiences and the spirit of collaboration.
