After
School at Dance Place
Dance Place reaches out to our immediate community improving
the quality of life in Brookland, and to the greater metropolitan
area by guiding children in becoming responsible teens and adults.
Our focus is on creative education on-site at Dance Place and
throughout the city in schools and community-based organizations,
providing free and discounted residencies, performances and classes.

Fridays at 11:00am
Youth experience the magic of dance in our theater
Don't miss this wonderful series of interactive performances
for public and charter school students in the Washington, DC metropolitan
area presented in the Dance Place Theater. Children join our dancers
on stage for a creative exchange in movement.
Performances are on select Fridays at 11:00 am at Dance Place,
or as indicated below, at THE ARC performance space. This program
is in collaboration with Arts for Every Student sponsored by the
DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
Fee: $2 per child, chaperones and teachers free

Stepping Out
Dance Place matches a professional teaching artists and performing
companies to DC area schools and community organizations through
residencies and performances in African dance, step, ballet, hip
hop, creative movement, jazz, tumbling and modern dance.
Teaching residencies have been held at the following schools

Carla
& Company
A one-hour performance by Dance Place's resident professional
modern dance company. Carla & Company is a troupe of
professional dancers directed by Carla Perlo that perform
contemporary modern dance for audiences of all ages. The
choreography focuses on uplifting social and humanitarian
themes. The dancers engage with audiences in participatory
activities and conversation.

Coyaba Dance Theater
A one-hour performance by the renowned Dance Place resident
company. Coyaba Dance Theater is a professional contemporary
West African Dance Company whose mission is to present dance,
music and other artistic/educational programs focusing on
the diverse ethnic groups of West Africa. Performance includes
audience participation.

Dance Place Step Team
A thirty-minute performance by a professional youth group,
featuring the rhythmic, synchronized body language of "Step".
The Dance Place Step team is comprised of youth ranging
in age from 10-14. The movement is precise, polyrhythmic,
highly stylized and energetic. For audiences of all ages.
Performance includes audience participation

Energizers' Boys and Girls Club
For youth ages 7-13
Since 1995, the Dance Place Energizers have been learning
and giving back to the local community. This after-school
program focuses on academic enrichment, life skills, character
development, community service and entrepreneurial skills.
Graduates have gone on to finish high school, graduate college
and create their own business. Taught by Dance Place's
dedicated youth leadership staff, college students and Dance
Place interns.

Teen Junior Staff Program
For teens ages 13-16 already involved in Next Generation
programs.
In this leadership program, teens are trained in office
administration, desktop publishing, facility maintenance
and theater production in a hands-on atmosphere at Dance
Place. Students are given a small honorarium for positive
participation and successful completion of duties. Participants
must have prior involvement through the Energizers or Kids
on the Move! dance classes at Dance Place. We also expect
students to meet specific academic requirements and show
a consistent positive attitude for potential growth. Directed
by Hermione Rhones-Glass and visiting workshop instructors.

Energizers' Summer Camp
For children ages 7-14 already involved in Next Generation
programs.
Dance Place's seven-week intensive summer camp program
from June 25 to August 10, 2007. An intensive summer program
offering exciting and challenging classes in life skills,
African dance and drumming, modern dance, hip-hop, step,
creative movement, tumbling, jazz, chorus, arts & crafts,
swimming, journaling and more. The camp culminates in an
annual public performance for family members and the general
public in the Dance Place theater. |
